Intergenerational narratives of citizenship among EU citizens in the UK after the Brexit referendum

The share of British naturalization applications by EU citizens increased in the aftermath 2016 referendum. This article offers unique insights into range motivations informing decisions to become or not among families from new and old member states. It contributes scholarship on migrants’ lived experiences adopting a family-centred approach explore intergenerational intersectional dynamics citizenship decision making. Naturalization involves personal collective reckoning with sense loss status imagined future. We argue that rather than “premium”, is framed many as response perceived (defensive narrative) threat (protective narrative). process mediated negotiated within household, narratives are embedded participants’ social positioning shaped their statuses senses entitlement.
